As an author, I have put my heart and soul into the book. But I believe the chapters on Faith (Chapter 2), the metaphor of an aeroplane to Christian life in Chapter 5, and the unique way of presenting the message of salvation in Chapter 6 will have its maximum impact.
The inspiration for this book comes from my country – India. Before India’s independence in 1947, the British ruled this vast country. The reach of the British Empire extended to many countries around the world. Still, India was its most prized collection, with abundant minerals, spices, skilled artisans, and a rich cultural heritage. Its strategic location, resources, and population generated unparalleled revenue for the British government, making India the coveted “Jewel in the British crown.”
However, for the majority of Indians living during that time, it was a matter of routine. They lived in cities, towns, and villages and carried out their daily activities as usual. Many were farmers who tended to their crops, some were artisans who honed their traditional skills, and others were employed in the British bureaucracy, military, industry, and other sectors. They relied on the government for infrastructure and other necessary resources for daily tasks.
India was home to numerous Maharajas who ruled over various small provinces throughout the country. Traditionally these Maharajas were royalty who controlled both people and territory in India. However, when the British took control of the country, they permitted the Maharajas to maintain their dominance over their respective provinces while still being subject to British authorities. The common people would turn to their local rulers for their livelihood and necessities regardless of whether they were under British rule or the rule of their local Maharajas. All they cared about was leading a peaceful life and carrying out their daily activities with as much comfort and ease as possible.
However, there were also Indians who had a different calling. They aspired to see India free from British rule, an India that would be independent and governed by its people. The mundane held no interest for them; their goal was to look ahead to the future. They were determined to fight the mighty British power with all the resources at their disposal. They left behind their homes, families, and possessions to give themselves entirely to the cause. They lived a simple and austere lifestyle, focusing solely on their objective. Sadly, many did not live to realise their dreams, sacrificing their lives for the cause. Their sacrifices motivated others to carry on the mission of a free India.
The Indian independence movement sparked reflection within me. Just like the everyday citizens during British rule in India, we go about our daily lives and turn to God only in moments of uncertainty. Forces of darkness control us, and our perception of God is similar to that of the Maharajas – a figurehead without actual power. We don't mind who governs us if we get what we want. We have diminished the idea of God to be just like a regular Maharaja deity. The Bible states that God has freed us from the devil's grasp and aims to liberate us from sin and death. Our role is to be like the freedom fighters, submitting our lives in faith to fulfil His will and bring glory to His name.
I wondered if our life was to be like the ordinary Indian or like those who fought the powers. What is the purpose of Christian living? What is the Biblical way of life? This book attempts to answer these questions and help us lead a life the Biblical way.
