Each devotion stems from my own conversations and prayers with God as well as the lessons that He has taught me. I wanted to pass them on so that others can be inspired in their own walk with God.
My favorite part of the book is the devotion on "God has a purpose for You" because for many years I struggled with a lack of confidence, not knowing who He created me to be. Since that time, He has continued to love me and share with me who He says I am. That is empowering through the Holy Spirit. It's amazing to think ""Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name." (Isaiah 49:1)
God Has A Purpose For You
God has a purpose for you and for me. He doesn't do anything without a purpose. We can't always see what that purpose is, but then we aren't God, are we?
It says in Isaiah 49:1:
"Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name."
Life is a Gift
Our very lives are a gift from God to us. I don't pretend to know why God chose to create us but I do know that he did and that he did it with purpose. I believe that part of that purpose is to have a relationship with us. He loved us so much that he chose to create us. In fact, there are no two people on this planet exactly alike. Every person on this planet who ever lived or ever will live is different from every other person. I can't even begin to think about what that number is.
Every year, on our birthdays we celebrate being born. We have our birthday parties, cake, and ice cream and various celebrations, but do we ever really think about how blessed we are to be here at all? Do we take time to thank God for creating us, to begin with? Most of the time it doesn't even occur to us to thank God for the gift of life.
God knows our names
One thing that catches my attention, in this verse, is that he called us and knew our names. Before our parents even knew our names, he did.
Not only that but in Psalm 139:13 it says:
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb."
God not only knew our name, but he created everything about us from the inside out. He designed each one of us with different personalities, likes, and dislikes, passions, interests, etc. He chose what color of hair we would have, the color of our eyes, our skin tone and our facial features and more.
Every little thing that makes you-you, he designed with a purpose in mind because he doesn't do anything without a plan or purpose.
God has a purpose for you
God is the creator and we are the creation. In the same way that an artist creates a beautiful painting or work of art, we are God's work of art. In the same way that we want the best for our children, he wants the best for us, his children. He is the potter and we are the clay as it says in Isaiah 64:8:
" Yet you, Lord, are our Father: We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand."
All those qualities that are unique to you, everything about you, God wants to use to bless you and to glorify him. When an artist creates a beautiful painting, he wants it to be a blessing to those who see it, he wants it to be appreciated and he wants to get the credit for what he created. God does too. We are his canvas, his clay. He wants our lives to be full of joy. God wants our lives to be a light and to glorify him.
He knows that life isn't always going to be easy because of sin, but God will always be there to lead us in the correct paths. He created us with love and purpose, so why would he want bad things to happen to us? Do we love our children any less when they make a mistake? No. We don't stop loving our children no matter what they do and neither does God.
Sometimes there are consequences for our actions but God still loves you. God has a purpose for you no matter what.
Jeremiah 29:11-13 NIV states, "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans" to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.'"
You must seek him
When we seek God with all our heart, he will answer us. God will guide you into his purpose for your life one step at a time. He doesn't reveal the big picture to us, only the next step because he wants us to have faith in him and in his plan. He wants us to trust him and to not lean our own understanding, but to lean on his.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
It's not always to discover his purpose for our lives but it is worthwhile because he wants so much more than we can ever conceive or imagine for our lives in the same way that we want so much for our own children.
When life gets hard
When life gets hard and confusing, I try to remember that I only need enough strength for today. You see, God already knows the future. He is already there. He knows what I will be facing tomorrow and the next day and so on because he knows all. Before we were born, he knew everything about us, what we would be facing day by day because all those days were "ordained" before any of them came to pass.
"Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:16
That doesn't mean that he ordained all the bad things that happen in our lives, but there are consequences for our sins and the sins of others. He will, however, help you when you ask him and pray to him and seek him with your whole heart. You have to ask though.
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, that you have a purpose for me. A good purpose to give me a hope and a future. Help me to never forget no matter how busy or hard life gets that you Love me and only seek good things for me. Show me the unique purpose that you have for me. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus name. Amen.
